A free alternative to PhotoShop is GIMP. While it is as powerful as PhotoShop, it's a bit harder to use. If you can't get your head around it, check some tutorials on YouTube:

Hope that helps.

You can now purchase Adobe's Creative Suite 4 Master Collection which goes for $2,500 Which basically has everything you could ever need. But if you are looking for just photo editing software they have Cs4 Design Premium which is specifically for that. I myself just use lightroom 2 Works great for me :)

The lastest version of Photoshop is CS3 and it is fairly expensive....probably the most robust package you can buy for digital still media.

Well I guess you can say it all depends on what your going to use it for, but I really find this one very good and easy to work with. And it's very inexpensive. You can do just about anything with this program. You can also turn it into a Book after you are finished with it. It's called StoryBook Creator2. I can give you the web address for it. It's can be found under digital scrapbooking.
